Remembering Pope Francis
Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community:
Today, our university community joins all Catholics and people around the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, a profoundly influential and beloved spiritual leader.
As the first Jesuit and first Latin American pope, Pope Francis brought a unique voice and vision to the Church — one grounded in humility, compassion, and concern for the most vulnerable. His pontificate was marked by a powerful commitment to justice, environmental stewardship, and dialogue across differences.
Here on our campus, these values have animated our mission and shaped our work. You can learn more about Georgetown’s engagement with Pope Francis and the Vatican on our website.
Today, we grieve — but we also reaffirm our commitment to continue the work Pope Francis so passionately advanced. In his memory, let us rededicate ourselves to building a more just, compassionate, and hopeful community, rooted in faith and guided by the Ignatian tradition of discernment and action.
This evening, Campus Ministry will host a Rosary for the Repose of the Soul of Pope Francis at 8:15 p.m. in Dahlgren Chapel of the Sacred Heart followed by a Mass for Easter Monday, with special prayers for the Repose of the Soul of Pope Francis, at 9:00 p.m. Information on additional opportunities for mourning and reflection will be shared on our website as they become available.
We offer our prayers and heartfelt condolences to all who were touched by Pope Francis’s extraordinary life and leadership. May he rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire hearts and minds for generations to come.
Sincerely,
Robert M. Groves
Interim President
