Recent Incidents on Campus
Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community,
I write today regarding recent incidents on the Hilltop Campus.
Flyers on Wednesday and Thursday
Flyers with disturbing content appeared on campus last Wednesday and Thursday. The Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) has worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). A person of interest has been identified and barred from campus.
Flyers on Saturday
Regarding the flyers that appeared on campus this past Saturday, GUPD is actively investigating the incident, working with the FBI and MPD.
Commitment to Safety
We will continue to address these matters with the vigilance that this moment demands. At this time, we do not believe that there is any active threat to the physical safety of our community.
GUPD has increased patrols across campus and taken additional measures to increase their visibility across campus.
If you are concerned about threatening behavior or are worried about potential violence to the university or someone at Georgetown, contact the Georgetown Threat Assessment Program; call GUPD at (202) 687-4343 or the Capitol Campus Department of Public Safety at (202) 662-9325; or share information anonymously through the LiveSafe app.
Remember Our Mission
Calls for violence and threats against our community have no place at Georgetown and are deeply concerning. As underscored in our mission statement, Georgetown University “was founded on the principle that serious and sustained discourse among people of different faiths, cultures, and beliefs promotes intellectual, ethical and spiritual understanding.” Attempting to intimidate individuals with whom you disagree with threats of physical force is the antithesis of serious and sustained discourse.
We have created resources for engaging in civil discourse at Georgetown, and we remind you of the 500-year history of Jesuit tradition as you approach conversations in the classroom and beyond.
We flourish as a community because we engage across different experiences, backgrounds, identities and political beliefs at Georgetown.
Sincerely,
Robert M. Groves
Interim President
