Messages to the Georgetown Community

Research Administration Organization and Chief Research Officer Search

The following message was sent to all faculty and staff in the Georgetown University community.

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past five years, we have sought to increase support of faculty research by integrating research administrative work across campuses. We write to inform you of the search for a new Chief Research Officer (CRO). This role will report to the President and will lead university-wide research administration, working in partnership with academic leadership and the University’s research community.

Over the past few months, careful review of our practices identified the next logical step in making our research administration efforts consistent with best practices at leading research universities. This builds on the initial success of the launch of the University’s Joint Office of Research Administration (JORA), Office of Research Oversight (ORO), and Office of Human Subject Protections (OHSP). In this new structure, we will bring together those units with the Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC).

It reorganizes the work of the senior vice president for research into a more unified structure to leverage existing research administration resources in a cost-efficient manner and better communicate the impactful work of our faculty.

Regarding the search, we have asked Carlo Tornatore, M.D., Professor and Chair in the Department of Neurology, Medical Center, and Chair and Neurologist-in-Chief at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, to serve as Chair of the CRO search committee. We are grateful to Dr. Tornatore for leading this important search for our community.

Joining him on the committee are members of our faculty and academic leadership.

The Committee’s work is being assisted by the search firm Spencer Stuart, along with support from our University Secretary, Marie Mattson.

The profile of the Chief Research Officer can be found here.

Sincerely,

Robert M. Groves
