Announcing the 2026 Recipient of the President’s Award for Distinguished Scholar-Teachers

I am pleased to announce this year’s recipient of the President’s Award for Distinguished Scholar-Teachers:
Marc E. Lippman, M.D., MACP, FRCP

We will recognize Dr. Lippman for his exceptional scholarship and extraordinary mentorship at Spring Faculty Convocation on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. in Gaston Hall on the Hilltop Campus.
I am grateful to everyone who submitted nominations in the fall. I especially thank Richard Schlegel, M.D., Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Pathology, for chairing our committee of faculty members and past scholar-teacher awardees who reviewed the nominations.

About Marc E. Lippman
Dr. Lippman is one of the most influential figures in breast cancer research over the past half century. He graduated from Cornell University and Yale Medical School and trained at Johns Hopkins. His career at the National Cancer Institute spanned over a decade, where he served as a senior investigator from 1974 to 1988. During this time, his groundbreaking work on estrogen receptors, growth factors, and hormonal regulation of breast cancer transformed the field. His research showed how endocrine treatments, including tamoxifen, could treat and prevent breast cancer, significantly improving millions of lives. Dr. Lippman has authored nearly 500 peer-reviewed publications, 34 books, and 193 book chapters.
Throughout his career, he has held distinguished chairs and leadership roles, including positions at the University of Michigan, the University of Miami, and Georgetown University, where he was the Director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center from 1988 to 2001. Beyond his research, Dr. Lippman is renowned for his mentorship, having trained six current directors of NCI-designated Cancer Centers and more than two dozen faculty at Georgetown. His dynamic small-group teaching is highly regarded.
Dr. Lippman’s accolades include the AACR Rosenthal Award, the Edwin B. Astwood Prize, the Brinker Award for Basic Science, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Jefferson Kimmel Cancer Center. He was the inaugural recipient of the American Cancer Society Lectureship and Prize at ASCO, elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, and holds a Mastership in the American College of Physicians.
