Announcement Regarding Dean Edward Montgomery

Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community:

It is with great appreciation for his dedication to Georgetown that I write to inform you that earlier today the Trustees of Western Michigan University named Edward B. Montgomery, Ph.D., Dean and Professor of Economics at our McCourt School of Public Policy, as its ninth President, effective August 1, 2017.

Dean Montgomery was appointed Dean of our Georgetown Public Policy Institute in 2010 and became Dean of the McCourt School of Public Policy in 2013, when a generous and transformative gift from Frank H. McCourt, Jr. (C’75) created the ninth current school of our University.

Throughout his tenure as Dean, Ed has deepened and expanded the work of our McCourt School through the creation of the Institute of Politics and Public Service, the Massive Data Institute, and the Baker Center for Leadership & Governance.

Under Dean Montgomery’s leadership, the McCourt School has strengthened research opportunities for faculty and furthered our efforts to engage with public policy questions on some of the most significant challenges of our time, including economic growth and opportunity, health and health care, climate and energy, and international development.  Dean Montgomery has also worked in innovative and creative ways to provide the best possible resources to McCourt School students in order to recruit some of the most promising future public policy scholars.

I am deeply grateful to Dean Montgomery, for his extraordinary contributions to our University and his exceptional efforts on behalf of our entire community.  I will be working with Provost Groves in the coming weeks to select an interim dean for the McCourt School and to organize a formal search process for Dean Montgomery’s successor.

Please join me in offering our warmest congratulations to Dean Montgomery and wishing him all the best as he prepares to serve as President of Western Michigan University.

Sincerely,

John J. DeGioia
