Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life

Launched in 2013—the same year as Pope Francis’s election to the papacy—the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life offers a forum to engage the most pressing social, political, and religious issues of our time. In the years since, the Initiative has hosted hundreds of gatherings and reached hundreds of thousands of people, both in person and online.

The Center on Faith and Justice

Georgetown’s Catholic and Jesuit tradition and its location in the nation’s capital presents us with a civic responsibility to seek the common good. Launched in 2021, the Center on Faith and Justice engages the resources of different faith traditions and their intersections with civic life, politics, and policy to help advance peace and justice in the United States and around the world.

Engaging Georgetown’s Catholic and Jesuit Identity

President DeGioia demonstrated a deep and sustained commitment to engaging Georgetown’s Catholic and Jesuit heritage and identity, in part through his presence at a large number of Masses that mark both the rhythm of the life of the Church and the academy.

Dahlgren Chapel Sacred Lecture

In addition to their liturgical preaching, the early Jesuits delivered sacred lectures as a means to instruct, edify, and challenge the laity on questions of faith and theology. Since 2014, Georgetown has welcomed scholars and religious leaders as part of the Dahlgren Chapel Sacred Lecture series. President DeGioia delivered the spring 2022 lecture, reflecting on formation and the practice of discernment.
