Announcing Carol Roan Gresenz, Ph.D, As Interim Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Studies

Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community:

I hope this finds you doing well and having enjoyed the Labor Day holiday with family and friends.

I write to provide an update on the leadership of our School of Nursing and Health Studies. As we embark on this new academic year, I am pleased to share that Carole Roan Gresenz, Ph.D., has been appointed Interim Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Studies (NHS).

I wish to again express my deepest gratitude to our colleague, Patricia Cloonan, Ph.D., RN, for her service as Dean and steadfast leadership of NHS over the past five years, and for her continued contributions to our community.

Carole, who assumed the role of Interim Dean at the beginning of this month, holds the Bette Jacobs Endowed Professorship in the Department of Health Systems Administration, and since 2018, she has served as NHS Senior Associate Dean. In addition to her service within our University community, Carole brings more than two decades of experience with the RAND Corporation, where she held a number of senior management roles, including Director of the Economics, Sociology, and Statistics Department; Director of the Health Economics, Finance and Organization Program; and Associate Director of the RAND Institute for Civil Justice. Carole also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Loyola University Maryland, as well as an M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from Brown University.

Carole has contributed impactful research on a range of complex health care challenges over the years, collaborating with colleagues across the University and MedStar Health. Her ongoing research is funded by leading national organizations, including the National Institute on Aging, the Department of Defense’s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. She currently sits on the editorial boards of Health Services Research and Medical Care Research and Review, and serves on the editorial advisory board for Transforming Care, a publication of the Commonwealth Fund.

Throughout her time with our University, Carole has demonstrated an exemplary level of commitment and care on behalf of our Georgetown community. Currently, Carole serves on our Gender Equity Task Force and is a member of the Budget and Finance Committee of our Faculty Senate. She also serves on the Georgetown-MedStar Health Scientific Council and chairs the NHS Racial Justice Scholar Search Committee, an initiative of our developing Institute for Racial Justice.

I am deeply grateful to Carole for assuming this important role as we begin our process to identify permanent leadership for the School of Nursing and Health Studies. Please join me in welcoming Carole to the role of Interim Dean, and expressing our most sincere appreciation for her leadership and commitment on behalf of our University.
