Leadership Transition at the Georgetown College of Arts & Sciences

Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community:
On behalf of President DeGioia, I write to share that Rosario (Rosie) Ceballo, Ph.D. dean of the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) and professor of psychology, has accepted a position at the University of Michigan as dean of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. She was formally appointed this afternoon by the University of Michigan Board of Regents and will conclude her service at Georgetown on June 30, 2024.
Dean Ceballo has served our community with distinction over the past two and a half years. As the dean of the oldest and largest school at Georgetown, she led 26 academic departments and 14 interdisciplinary programs, encouraging collaboration, cross-disciplinary engagement, and a deep commitment to the liberal arts.
During her tenure, the College has been a leader in the development of our new Capitol Campus, working with the McCourt School of Public Policy and the Earth Commons Institute to develop and launch new joint undergraduate majors in public policy and environmental sustainability on the Capitol Campus.
She has initiated and supported new efforts around research and education. She co-led a Task Force with Elliott Crooke, Ph.D., vice president for faculty and academic affairs at GUMC, charged by President DeGioia to explore new structures for university-wide collaboration in the sciences; and, at the College, she launched a new faculty mentorship program for Provost’s Distinguished Faculty Fellows and new assistant professors. The CAS First Fellows Program, established this past year with generous philanthropic support, enhances mentorship resources and opportunities for first-generation students studying in the College.
As a teacher and scholar of Psychology, she has fostered deep engagement in ideas of flourishing in her Ignatian seminar course, “Psychology: Creating a Purposeful Life,” which she co-taught with Jennifer Woolard, Ph.D., professor of psychology and the College’s vice dean of faculty.
Dean Ceballo has left a lasting vision for the future of the College of Arts & Sciences at Georgetown, leading a process to reclaim its historic name, and launching a new magazine to celebrate the work of the College’s faculty, staff, students, and alumni. All of these efforts have strengthened this historic school and positioned it for future leadership at Georgetown and in the world.
She will be greatly missed and we wish her the very best as she returns to the University of Michigan, her previous academic home for more than 26 years.
I wish to offer a personal word of appreciation to Rosie and to the Dean’s Office for their contributions over these past few years.
In the next few days, I will provide an update on interim leadership at the College as we plan for a national search for Dean Ceballo’s successor.
