Announcing Norman J. Beauchamp Jr., MD, MHS, as Our New Executive Vice President for Health Sciences
April 16, 2024
Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community:
It is with great excitement that I write to announce Norman J. Beauchamp Jr., MD, MHS, as our new Executive Vice President for Health Sciences and Executive Dean of the School of Medicine, beginning July 1, 2024. He will serve as a tenured faculty member in our Department of Neurology, with a secondary appointment in our Department of Radiology at Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC).
Dr. Beauchamp, a leading researcher in the diagnosis and treatment of stroke and an experienced academic leader, has served as the Executive Vice President for Health Sciences at Michigan State University (MSU) since 2019 and has been responsible for important moments of growth and transformation at MSU, as their executive vice president and in his roles as MSU’s inaugural Associate Provost and Assistant Vice President for Health Affairs and as dean of the MSU College of Human Medicine. He brings invaluable experience from MSU, working with faculty, clinicians, researchers, and staff members to support 3,200 students across two medical schools and a college of nursing and deliver excellent teaching, research, and care.
He joined MSU in 2016 after fourteen years as professor and chair of the Department of Radiology at the University of Washington (UW), where he also served as president of their Physicians Practice, as chair and vice chair of the Faculty Senate, as a co-founder of the UW School of Medicine’s Wellness Committee, and as the founding medical director of the Seattle/King County Clinic, an annual volunteer clinic that provides free medical, dental, and vision care to thousands of local residents.
After completing his medical degree at MSU, he began his medical career at the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University (JHU), where he completed his radiology residency, neuroradiology fellowship, and neurointerventional training before joining their faculty in 1996. There, he served as vice chair for clinical operations and interim chair for radiology.
As a neurointerventional radiologist, his research has focused on improving approaches to stroke prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. At JHU and UW, he directed the Cardiovascular Health Study MRI Image Analysis Center, a National Institutes of Health-funded center with nearly 6,000 study participants. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, received three outstanding faculty teaching awards in radiology at JHU, and was recognized with the UW David B. Thorud Leadership Award.
He has served in a number of leadership roles, including as president of the American Roentgen Ray Society and chair of its International Outreach Committee, as chair and member of the board of directors of the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments, and chair of the Education Commission and board chancellor for the American College of Radiology.
As we strengthen our medical center and deepen our University-wide commitment to health, I am excited and honored to welcome Dr. Beauchamp as the next leader of our GUMC. He brings tremendous leadership and energy and has demonstrated a deep dedication to our vision for the future of health sciences at Georgetown and the mission of our University.
I wish to offer my most sincere appreciation to our search committee chair, Distinguished University Professor Lucile Adams-Campbell, Ph.D., and the members of our search committee for their exceptional work during this extensive search process. I am deeply grateful for their contributions at this important moment for our University community.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Beauchamp to Georgetown.
Sincerely,
John J. DeGioia
