The Kennedy Center and Georgetown University host a musical celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy in a free Millennium Stage event featuring Aretha Franklin, Nuttin' but Stringz, and the Let Freedom Ring Choir directed by the Rev. Nolan Williams.

Georgetown University hosts a spiritual service with reflections by guest preacher, Reverend Dr. Raphael Warnock, Senior Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Ebenezer Baptist Church was the spiritual home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. where he preached his ministry of non-violence. The Pine Forge Academy Choir will perform musical selections, with readings and other reflections by members of the Georgetown University community.

Martin Luther King Day Community Bus Tour

Dr. Maurice Jackson will lead a bus tour to visit communities in various parts of Washington, DC, that exemplify Washington’s unique culture, history and social context, placing a particular emphasis on the importance of Martin Luther King to social justice in Washington, DC. Communities and organizations in Anacostia, Northwest Washington, and the U Street Corridor will be showcased. The tour is limited to 30 people and will be filled on a first come – first serve basis. The official unveiling of our year-long student run survey project on diversity at Georgetown University which surveyed over 1,500 Georgetown students. The results have been broken down into six groups Race, Religion, School/Class, Gender/ Sexual Orientation, and Educational Background. The event will attempt to provide a very clear view of how students feel about each other, themselves, and the University. The Commission will be presenting eight recommended diversity initiatives as a result of their research.
